Meltdown #25: Social Goddess

This week we hear a desperate plea from Mother Earth herself after the COP26 climate conference.

A plea to Human Kind, this is your Mother Earth
I have been Goddess of this planet from since its birth
But I’ve been damaged
Polluted and ravaged
My health is no cause for merriment nor mirth

I am your matriarch of mountains, the seas and the air
Your conscience, your wonderwall, your natural heir
Your Pacha Mama
Your own nirvana
But Mother Nature deserves more affection and care

With contaminated lungs, my toxic breath’s warmed
I’ve tried to send warnings with huge howling storms
My skin exhumes
From all the fumes
After the COP Climate Pact, I’m a woman scorned

I can barely bear another one and a half degrees
Or you’ll cook my kidneys and I’ll collapse at the knees
I’ll over perspire
My body will expire
Man-made climate change  is an insidious disease

I’ve been diagnosed with an atmospheric inversion
To greenhouse gasses, I’ve an allergic aversion
I can’t excrete
My natural heat
My heavenly body’s in a state of confusion

If you keep blowing smoke in my face at free will
I am destined to become terminally ill
Out of breath
Choked to death
Until coal retires, the higher my medical bill

You’re poisoning me with carbon, so putrid and smelly
And now you want to capture and store it in my belly
Burning my fossils
Gets up my nostrils
But pumping smoke down my throat, not on your nelly

I know that coal has given many countries much wealth
And you’ve voted to still dig and burn it by stealth
And fracking for gas
Has piled up the cash
But I urge you to stop and consider my health

You must cease subsidies NOW to fossil fuel industries
And stop letting power stations pollute as they please
Choose a coal moratorium
Or a world crematorium
All I simply ask for is clean air to breathe

It should be a road race for cars to be electric
Inhaling your exhausts, my organs are septic
Cutting car emissions
Will help my remission
They won’t wreck your weekends, no need to be sceptic

It’s the developed countries that have caused my infliction
And those fossil fuel nations with the greatest dereliction
Must fund the biggest contribution
To the green revolution
Yet the COP’s set my destiny with a watered-down prescription

Alas my new medical script is still a very slow drip
I’m left sucking on soot, you want to still let it rip
Just given a few vitamins
Until you get green hydrogen
Such a disappointing outcome from your COP26 trip

Your compromised communique of cosmetic therapies
I’ve no time for unimagined, uninvented remedies
You must phase OUT coal
And set more urgent goals
I desperately need a booster shot of renewable energy

I’m appealing to you please to recontemplate
You’re short-term custodians and almost too late
For your liveable future
I need your nurture
For your wanton neglect, my broken heart aches

For I am your Goddess of eternal life
Of all things beauty, fertility and light
Of all living creatures
And natural features
But to save this weathered lady …. Human Kind failed to unite!
