Meltdown #15: Social Surrender

We’ve surrendered to Delta, admitted defeat
Cycled out of control, we fall at its feet
Thrown over the handle bars
The bruises and social scars
Armed only with vaccines, a dishonourable retreat

The COVID zero goal is no longer in play
Until we’re double-dosed, lockdown will stay
They’ve abandoned suppression
It’s a State of depression
With spiralling cases, the virus got away

There’s light down the tunnel, but it’s hard to stay strong
The light is too dim and the tunnel’s too long
Not ‘till October
Will this nightmare be over
Bitter surrender, Delta’s too far gone

This first week of Spring has recoiled in our face
At best we will spend it in a 10K space
Craving normality
Struggling mentality
Climbing walls, we’ve gotta get out of this place

So Scotty keeps marketing his national plan
As a diversion from Delta hitting the fan
It’s all on vaccination
As our last salvation
To get back to our lives before all this began

It’s a plan to distract from our PM’s failure
He’s out parading as the lockdown saviour
Some States won’t re-open
Their Premiers have spoken
They point to the mess due to his behaviour

But if we must live with COVID, let’s do it with care
Not burn down the house on a wing and a prayer
Not just blindly hope
That hospitals will cope
How many fatalities are we willing to bear

Yes opening up needs some honest conversation
Like likely deaths in indigenous population
In places far flung
And amongst the young
And those still waiting for their vaccination

Like children struggling with mental anxiety
We’ve ignored adolescents across our society
They’re isolated
Demotivated
It’s their future, their friends, they deserve our priority

Large business took JobKeeper with massive profits
Put the ill-gotten gains straight into their pockets
They won’t give it back
But it’s a much different tack
For working folk harassed with Centrelink dockets

Printing money is driving a stock market boom
Lower interest inflating a housing balloon
With low unemployment
High cash deployment
The locked down economy’s still keen to consume

New Zealand is still trying to bend down the curve
In a short strict lockdown they didn’t deserve
They’re all under shelter
Trying to beat Delta
A COVID- free country they want to preserve

Thanks to Japan for hosting the Paralympic Games
You handled typhoons, heatwaves and pouring rains
Though COVID was raging
You committed to staging
Two wonderfully memorable sporting campaigns

We may soon need a jab just to buy a beer
We should be fully dosed to buy an airfare
To a holiday resort
Or to go and watch sport
Vaccination should be mandatory to go anywhere

We can’t stay cloistered with our lives on the racks
But laggards are lingering for Pfizer packs
Don’t worry about the brand
Bare your arm and lend a hand
Please do us ALL a favour ….. just get yourself vaxxed!
